Life is Mostly Straws
Studio at 620, Richard Manley, Kylin Brady, Georgia Mallory Guy, Chris Jackson, Christopher Rutherford, and Bob Devin Jones
by Richard Manley Featuring an all star cast: Kylin Brady, Georgia Mallory Guy*, Chris Jackson, and Christopher Rutherford Directed by Bob Devin Jones Synopsis: "Life is Mostly Straws" centers around David and Noah, two brothers who shared a troubled childhood, during which they relied upon each other for survival. Although successful by all outward signs and still very close, the fear and self-doubt of their early days lie just beneath the surface of their apparent confidence. As well, they have made words their weapon of choice. "Life is Mostly Straws" is a literate play, where one character uses language like a scalpel while the other wields it like a bludgeon, but each understands its power. About Richard Manley: After two decades of success as a copywriter and advertising executive, Richard Manley started a second career writing stage plays. He rediscovered his passion for the sound of the language and its potential to entertain and provoke and inspire.

That Child of Always by April Hartley and Paintings From LAla Land by Eva Avenue
Studio at 620, April Hartley, and Eva Avenue
That Child of Always by April Hartley “That Child of Always” is a new body of work by textile artist, April Hartley, that turns traditional embroidery on its head while exploring how children who are experiencing hardship or trauma express themselves when they may not have the vocabulary to do so. Hartley began carefully transforming collected children’s drawings into embroidery on fabric when several children in her life were facing difficult circumstances, which flooded her with memories of her own childhood and that feeling of voiceless-ness that comes with being a kid. Hartley connects embroidery, which is permanent, precious, and inherently tied to the household, symbolizing order and light-heartedness, like the “Home Sweet Home” piece on grandma’s wall, to the temporary nature of a child’s sketch, something often dismissed, and to the lasting effect of childhood. Along with the original embroidery works, the exhibit will include site-specific embroidery installations, and will also officially launch the series’ accompanying art book, also titled “That Child of Always”.
Paintings From LAla Land by Eva Avenue While living in Los Angeles in March and April 2016 to attend a neon art/sign workshop, Eva Avenue painted a new series of large vibrant imaginal cell watercolors. Surging and falling through the energy fields of these paintings done around L.A., imaginal cells are nature’s bio-units of resilience and change. She creatively uses them to represent the units of energy making up solid matter, reminding us that everything is alive, empty and full of music. Her neon art sign, designed and executed at Lili Lakich Neon Studio in L.A.’s Arts District, will also be on display.

The Gray Lady
Studio at 620 and Jimmy Baumgartner
The Studio@620 presents an exhibit of artwork by Jimmy Baumgartner. Nicknamed for years as, “the Gray Lady”, The New York Times is a constant source of inspiration to the artist. “The combining of incongruous materials— wood, ceramic, paper and acrylic —reflect my personal tussle with harmony. My art is truly a reflection of who I am—eclectic with an edge of uncertainty, evident of past and ongoing struggles. Veiled messages of those struggles are evident to some, yet remain forever tucked away from others. Just as time creates layers of who we become, my work evolves and changes—layer upon layer.” – Jimmy Baumgartner Jimmy Baumgartner studied art at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida and Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. He has a BS in Sociological Research from Florida State University and a MBA from the University of South Florida and is the Director of Clinical Research for BayCare Health System.

Tru
Studio at 620, Jay Presson Allen, Mark Chambers, and Lisa Tricomi
Veteran actor Mark Chambers brings Truman Capote back to life in this one man play directed by Lisa Tricomi. Adapted from the words and works of Truman Capote, Tru takes place in the writer’s New York City apartment during the week before Christmas 1975. An excerpt from Capote’s infamous novel Answered Prayers has recently been published in Esquire and the author’s friends have turned their back on him. Alone and hurting, Capote soothes himself with pills, alcohol, and chocolate truffl es while musing about his checkered life and career. The Naples Daily News had this to say about Mark’s performance of Tru at The Florida Repertory Theatre: “Mark Chambers serves it up–stylish, fascinating and full of wit and verve. He vamps, he twirls, he sashays, he prances through the “front hall” to accept deliveries–in short, he becomes Capote...Much like the mercurial subject–the show‘s emotional mood turns on a dime. Chambers delivers perfectly time and time and again.” We are lucky to have this opportunity for a reprise performance. Don't miss it!

Postcard, The Messengers, 2015
Kristin Beauvois, Studio at 620, and Tyler Staggs
Between truth of experience and recollection you find a blend of color and abstraction that is the basis for Kristin Beauvois' portraiture. Using ink and watercolor she creates soft and sometimes disharmonious images that evoke and imply meaning and narrative. "Preoccupied with the elusiveness of identity, my intentions are to create a body of portraiture that depicts moments of vulnerability that are then fictionalized by a mix of memory and imagination...because the mind and its memories are capricious in nature they distort what my eyes see as truth and the paintings become something between the actual experience and my recollection of it."-Kristin Beauvois

Postcard, As We Fall, 2015
Moving Ethos and Studio at 620
"As We Fall" is an evening length dance theater piece that exposes the struggles of contemporary life. What happens when we become slaves to our likes and dislikes? What happens when our sense of right and wrong gets clouded by what feels good and what doesn't? What happens when we become so self-involved that our actions no longer reflect a sense of empathy or love? As We Fall depicts the falling of our human intellect as we become emotionally driven beings, and sheds light on all that gets torn down in that path. It demonstrates the emptiness that unveils when impulsive behavior takes over and we become animals. Can we maintain hope?
