This digital collection highlights postcards from a number of events held at Studio@620 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bob Devin Jones and David Ellis started the Studio@620 in 2004. This collection contains the postcards of a variety of events, from poetry readings and plays to photography and printmaking exhibits. The collection illustrates the rich history of the playhouse and the art movement in St. Petersburg, Florida over the last few decades.

The Studio@620 presents an exhibition of recent work by emerging painter Ben Hamburger. Ben is an oil painter whose work revolves around the human form while indulging in various textures and work surfaces. His work is concerned with revealing energy within his subjects through vigorous brushstrokes and capturing the form in vibrant intensity. This painting installation portrays the mysterious, often contradictory, intricacy of our being.

Decades of Day Work

Your Real Stories Productions and Studio@620 collaborate to bring you “Decades of Day Work,” a series that uses live presentations, music, drama, and spoken word to celebrate the dignity of a day’s work! “Decades of Day Work” responds to the best-selling novel and blockbuster movie, “The Help.” Both of these introduced new generations of Americans to the restricted world of domestic workers in 1960’s Mississippi. Now, “Decades of Day Work” lets us hear the real stories from our friends and neighbors—from Black women who worked ‘in family’ and the White men and women who employed them. Come and be inspired.

Extremities

The Studio@620 welcomes students from Pinellas County Center for the Arts as they present “Extremities”, a play by William Mastrosimone. When a woman turns the tables on a would-be rapist, an ordinary day becomes anything but. Extremities is a chilling and disturbing journey of exploration through the impulses of self-preservation and revenge, dealing intimately with conflicting views on a woman’s place in society and the relationship between women in respects to competition, jealousy and sex.

Knives in Hens

In a pre-industrial, God-fearing nowhere land, a young woman is given a language for her heart—freeing and exposing her. An uneducated young woman, trapped by marriage in a closed and superstitious community, develops an intense relationship with the village outcast. Sensuality and poetic language combine to make this a seductive tale of solitude, sexuality and intellectual awakening.

Murder Ballad

The Blue Scarf Collective and The Studio@620 present “Murder Ballad” as part of the Golden Ticket Theatre Series. “Murder Ballad” tells the story of men and women in Knoxville, TN, one year after the end of the Civil War, as they struggle to accept the tragedies they experienced during the war, and embrace love and life. Based on the stories in traditional American murder ballads, the play is a tense, spooky, heartbreaking and hopeful look at how war affects community. Directed by Selena Ambush.

The Studio@620 invites you to Pillowman, a play by Martin McDonagh, as presented by a group of PCCA theatre students led by George Kielty.
In Pillowman, a writer in a totalitarian state is interrogated about the gruesome content of his stories and their relation to several child murders in his town.

PRIDE (and Prejudice)

The Studio@620 welcomes photographer Lamar Marchese as he presents “PRIDE (and Prejudice) A Photo Essay”. The exhibit of large format color photographs documents the 2009 & 2010 Gay Pride Parade in St. Petersburg, one of the largest such events in the southeast. As a photographer, Marchese's interest lies in the canvas of the human face and is a mix of portraiture and photojournalism.

Proof

The Studio@620 welcomes students from Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA) as they present Proof by David Auburn. Proof won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a recently deceased mathematical genius. Catherine may have inherited a touch of her father’s talent, but did she also inherit his demons?

(NCECA is the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) You're invited to experience an exhibit of recent ceramics work by a select group of artists. Opening reception will be held Thursday March 31 from 6:30-9:30 PM. Admission is free and open to the public. A special UF Alumni reception will precede the opening from 5:30 - 6:30 PM on March 31, 2011.

Same Clay Old Way

The Studio@620 invites you to “Same Clay Old Way”, an exhibition of ceramic objects dating from 3000 BCE–1900 CE used in daily life by ordinary people. This exhibit of ceramic antiquities is presented by David Bewley and will be on display April 7–16, 2011 with an opening reception to be held on Thursday April 7 from 6:30–9:30 PM. All artifacts will be available for purchase. Come see how much and how little has changed over centuries of use of clay in our daily lives.

To enjoy a piece of Antarctica you are invited to join us for a walk among the artistry of Paul Suprenand’s landscape and animal imagery.

The Laramie Project

The Studio@620 welcomes The Laramie Project, June 20-22, 2011. This powerful and emotional play focuses on the murder of Matthew Shepard (October 1998), a gay college student living in Laramie, Wyoming. Throughout this show you will meet a myriad of real characters reporting the circumstances of what is happening with Matthew, the legal side of what happened, and personal reactions and opinions. Ryan Monroe specifically wanted to mount this show in June because he understands the importance of the message in The Laramie Project. It has been one of Ryan’s goals to produce this show in hopes of spreading awareness of hate crimes during St. Pete Pride Month. Please come out and support Pinellas County Center for the Arts students as they produce The Laramie Project for you.

This event will premier short films smashed together with several local featured artists, topped off with some breathtaking performance art and live music. Film Synopsis: Veronica del Mar loses her hearing after a traumatic event in her life. She closes herself from the world that surrounds her until someone stirs a new feeling, a new point of view, a new world. She meets Fab, a young musician enthralled by her silence. Yet… Veronica remains in silence. Gabe is a lost, young soul getting involved with the wrong people. He is slowly being taken into the world of drugs. His life is becoming a mess. He finds his reason in the signs of the everyday, the signs the world gives him. He finds his peace in Veronica and the signs she gives the world. Yet… Veronica remains in silence.

Join The Studio@620 as we premiere a night of one acts by local playwright Samuel French, the drama THIS ONE NIGHT IN THE WAREHOUSE and the dark comedy WRITER’S BLOCK, running June 3 thru 6 at the Studio@620. THIS ONE NIGHT IN THE WAREHOUSE is a startling ethical mystery which follows the story of Brett and Aaron, two average strangers locked together in a warehouse. WRITER’S BLOCK is a dark comedy that will leave audiences gasping in shock and laughing in the aisles at the same time. Aleck is a children’s author who has become suicidal and hallucinates a visitation by the spirit of Dr. Seuss. Samuel French is a young emerging playwright embarking on his collegiate career at Carnegie Mellon.

The Studio@620 and local artist Coralette Damme, aka The Crafty Hag, invite you to participate in the Dirty Hands Workshop Series. Four Sunday "crafter-noons" full of hands-on creativity. Don't miss this night of hot latin jazz featuring Guisando Caliente Latin Jazz Quintet. Guisando Caliente is one of the most exciting Latin jazz bands in the southeast. Its members have performed with many of the major names of Latin Jazz including Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Dave Valentin and Herbie Mann. Guisando Caliente's music is in the spirit of Tito Puente's music and has a strong Afro-Cuban influence.
