This digital collection highlights postcards from a number of events held at Studio@620 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bob Devin Jones and David Ellis started the Studio@620 in 2004. This collection contains the postcards of a variety of events, from poetry readings and plays to photography and printmaking exhibits. The collection illustrates the rich history of the playhouse and the art movement in St. Petersburg, Florida over the last few decades.

Ben Hamburger: The Isolation of Intimacy

The Studio@620 presents an exhibition of recent work by emerging painter Ben Hamburger. Ben is an oil painter whose work revolves around the human form while indulging in various textures and work surfaces. His work is concerned with revealing energy within his subjects through vigorous brushstrokes and capturing the form in vibrant intensity. This painting installation portrays the mysterious, often contradictory, intricacy of our being.

Decades of Day Work

Your Real Stories Productions and Studio@620 collaborate to bring you “Decades of Day Work,” a series that uses live presentations, music, drama, and spoken word to celebrate the dignity of a day’s work! “Decades of Day Work” responds to the best-selling novel and blockbuster movie, “The Help.” Both of these introduced new generations of Americans to the restricted world of domestic workers in 1960’s Mississippi. Now, “Decades of Day Work” lets us hear the real stories from our friends and neighbors—from Black women who worked ‘in family’ and the White men and women who employed them. Come and be inspired.

Extremities

The Studio@620 welcomes students from Pinellas County Center for the Arts as they present “Extremities”, a play by William Mastrosimone. When a woman turns the tables on a would-be rapist, an ordinary day becomes anything but. Extremities is a chilling and disturbing journey of exploration through the impulses of self-preservation and revenge, dealing intimately with conflicting views on a woman’s place in society and the relationship between women in respects to competition, jealousy and sex.

Knives in Hens

In a pre-industrial, God-fearing nowhere land, a young woman is given a language for her heart—freeing and exposing her. An uneducated young woman, trapped by marriage in a closed and superstitious community, develops an intense relationship with the village outcast. Sensuality and poetic language combine to make this a seductive tale of solitude, sexuality and intellectual awakening.

Murder Ballad

The Blue Scarf Collective and The Studio@620 present “Murder Ballad” as part of the Golden Ticket Theatre Series. “Murder Ballad” tells the story of men and women in Knoxville, TN, one year after the end of the Civil War, as they struggle to accept the tragedies they experienced during the war, and embrace love and life. Based on the stories in traditional American murder ballads, the play is a tense, spooky, heartbreaking and hopeful look at how war affects community. Directed by Selena Ambush.

Pillowman

The Studio@620 invites you to Pillowman, a play by Martin McDonagh, as presented by a group of PCCA theatre students led by George Kielty.
In Pillowman, a writer in a totalitarian state is interrogated about the gruesome content of his stories and their relation to several child murders in his town.

The Studio@620 welcomes The Performing Arts Consortium of St. Petersburg as they present A Kaleidoscope of Musical Sketches on Sunday October 23rd at 3:00 PM. The afternoon will feature a variety of musical arts including mesmerizing popular vocal interpretations, jazz stylings, and evocative instrumental performances. Showcased will be original arrangements by composer/pianist James Weaver, new representations of works by Cole Porter, and more. Andrew Geddis, Studio at 620, Melrose Elementary School, John Hopkins Middle School, and Lakewood High School
The Studio@620 welcomes Andrew Geddis, classical guitarist, performing in benefit for "Midtown Through Our Eyes" on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 3:00 PM. "Midtown Through Our Eyes" is an annual exhibition of student photography produced during a journalism summer camp program called Journeys in Journalism. This fund raising concert is being held to ensure that young people from melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle, and Lakewood High Schools continue to have access to this opportunity. Mr. Geddis was a regular performer at the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York and is performing a series of recitals at the New York Public Library.

The Studio@620 and The Florida Humanities Council welcome Phyllis McEwen as she brings to life Zora Neale Hurston's folklore. The evening will showcase the work songs, creation myths, spirituals and comedy that Zora collected in the turpentine camps and jook joints of Florida during her tenure with the WPA.

This dance event will premier 4 new works from the artistic duo and a critically-acclaimed work from their past repertoire, alongside a guest artist dance company Moving Ethos from Sarasota.

Dick Gregory, Studio at 620, National Congress of Black Woman Inc., and The Higgins Alcohol and Addiction Research Program
The Studio@620 announces a special event fundraiser with iconic comedian and social justice activist Dick Gregory. His social satire paved the way for future African American comedians and his activism included struggles for civil rights, economic reform, anti-drug issues, anti-war efforts, political campaigns and more. Proceeds raised from this event will benefit the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., The Higgins Alcohol and Addiction Research Program, The Studio@620 educational initiatives. The evening will include a performance and speech from Mr. Gregory followed by a question and answer session.

The Fletcher Dance Project, Studio at 620, Erin Fletcher, and Phillip Glass
The Fletcher Dance Project invites you to flood your imagination with their multimedia dance theater installation "Glass Candy." "Glass Candy" explores America's need for consumerism, the exploitation of its icon and its impressions on its youth. Also premiering is "Glass" a contemporary modern dance to the works of composer Phillip Glass. The piece is collaboration between Artistic Director Erin Fletcher, and dancers.

You're invited an evening of live music as only Kevin Wlech can deliver. Welch, who's roots span from California and Oklahoma around the globe to his current home base near Austin, Texas, is touring in support of his latest CD A Patch of Blue Sky. Welch was nominated with his musical partners in 2007 and 2008 for Duo/Group of the year by the Americana Music Association. A Patch of Blue Sky was released on JMusic Road Records and is climbing the Americana charts. The album features 10 new songs, all written or co-written by Kevin. The album is an ultimately hopeful journey from darkness to dawn. Come hear sleections from this cd and other prior releases during his performance at The Studio on Saturday May 7, 2011.

You're invited to "Mostly for Love and Peanuts," an original dance theatre piece by Erik Wagner and The Trigger Group. The Studio@620 is pleased to welcome Erik back, who you may recall from his prior performance, "Look Tonight," presented in 2010. In this new choreography, Erik examines "work" and the value of art and the artist in society, as well as the survival strategies that both contribute to and hinder one's longevity.

Each Thursday evening in May, start the weekend early and enjoy the beautiful waterfront while watching a movie classic outdoors in North Straub Park. The movies are FREE (pay what you can donation requested). Come early and purchase food and drink from some of Saturday Morning Market's most popular vendors or enjoy your own picnic while listening to music before the movie. Rent a chair for a few dollars or bring your own blanket or seat! Convenient parking available at Baywalk garage or in the Pier parking lots.

The Studio@620 invites you to three evenings of live jazz entertainment featuring The Nate Najar Trio. This series covers three Tuesday evenings: February 8, April 5, and May 3, 2011. Each performance begins at 7:30 PM and will feature swinging jazz bossa nova and classics, all done in Nate's inimitable style. The Nate Najar Trio consists of Nate Najar on guitar, John Lamb on bass, and Stephen Bucholtz on the drums.

Featuring Alice Ferrulo as Olivia, Four Chairs, a short film by Alice Ferrulo edited by Scott Reus of Vanishing Point Films, sculpture by Darren Carter Beistle, original music by Dennis Mcallister, and costume designs from Rogerio Martins' Envy Collection 2011-2012. Olivia: Meaning Envy is designed around the notion that by definition envy is "a secret within," as evident in each component of the art installation. Black Horse Theatre is committed to addressing the human state of being. Always intimate and vulnerable, the work is set forth in hopes of rattling the mind and spirit, drawing upon components of dance, theater and film.

The Studio@620 welcomes Travis Mesman & The Fletcher Dance Project as they present a collaborative dance concert "On the Face of It." The performance will feature group work performed by The Fletcher Dance Project as well as a look at the many sides of artist Travis Meman in a one man show setting. The choreographic dynamic displayed is influenced by many years of professional dance and study, resulting in a contemporary take of the artform. As always, the artists claim to challenge the audience's notions of dance concepts while gracefully showcasing their physicality with their seamless and subtle techniques. The evening will be sure to captivate you with projected visuals, innovative dance theater, acrobatics and high energy performances. Purnama Sari Balinese Dance Company and Studio at 620
The Studio@620 welcomes Purnama Sari Balinese Dance Company as they present sacred dances from "The Island of the Gods: on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 PM. The performance will include a classic court dance, ritual dances, and ancient mask dances. For the Balinese, dance is a medium for traveling between "Sekela" (the world of form) and "Niskala" (the world of spirits). The founders of Purnama Sari ("essence of full moon"), Surapsari and Indra, studied traditional Balinese dance with internationally acclaimed masters from Ubud, the arts capital of Bali and have been performing and teaching in the U.S. since 2000.
