Clifford Gibbons Oral History Project

Clifford Gibbons Oral History Project

Clifford Sam Gibbons, eldest son of the Congressman Sam M. Gibbons and Martha H. Gibbons, offers insight into his father's life and 44-year career in public service. The interviews enrich and complement the Sam Gibbons archives and oral histories preserved at the University of South Florida.

Clifford's narrative begins in Tampa, Florida, where he, as a 5th generation Tampa native, witnessed his father's decade in the Florida Legislature. His accounts illuminate the relentless efforts to establish the University of South Florida and secure the initial and increasing annual federal appropriations to create the USF School of Medicine. The interviews capture Clifford's front-row seat during the transformative 1960s and 1970s, highlighting his father's leadership role in national politics. Returning to Washington in the late 1970s, Clifford embarked on a 50-year career in public policy. His work, especially following Congressman Gibbons' retirement in 1997, included his father's partnership at Gibbons & Company – Washington, D.C., focusing on international trade policy, groundbreaking cancer research funding, and the launch of CanceRx.
