Abstract
In the ninth installment of this oral history, Cliff Gibbons discusses the development and impact of U.S. retirement savings plans, focusing on the 401(k) and Roth IRA. He reflects on his father, Sam Gibbons’ experiences during Bill Clinton’s early political career, including his appointment as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and his efforts toward healthcare reform. Cliff also describes the shifting political climate following the 1994 U.S. House elections and its challenges. He concludes by discussing his father’s retirement and the growing difficulties of campaign fundraising.
