Florida Fishing Captains Oral History Project

Florida Fishing Captains Oral History Project

The Florida Fishing Captains Oral History project is part of a larger project from Terry Howard, interviewer, author, and commercial king mackerel fisherman.

"I enjoy Florida History and sea stories. Counting my interviews for The Oculina Bank Study, my three books about Florida fishing captains, and this, the 'Florida Fishing Captains’ Oral History Project,' I have interviewed over 50 east coast Florida recreational, commercial, and charter fishing captains. It has been fascinating, great fun, and an honor to collect and chronicle all of their stories. In the “Florida Fishing Captains’ Oral History Project”, twelve Florida east coast captains share stories about their fishing history on the Atlantic Ocean; including how and why they began fishing, fishing methods used, industry changes, weather occurrences, sustainability of fish populations, and the culture of ocean fishermen. They also share some exciting sea stories. Together, in their own voices, twelve captains paint a colorful firsthand historical account of commercial and charter fishing off the East coast of Florida from the mid 1900s to the present." - Terry Howard
