Monteverde Institute: Sustainable Design, Planning and Community Development
This collection contains proposed designs and planning documents to assist in Sustainable Community Development, based on issues identified as important by the community. Many of the projects in this collection come from the Sustainable Futures Summer academic program at the Monteverde Institute.
This digital collection is a service of the Monteverde Institute, whose mission is to catalyze social, ecological and economic sustainability by integrating community initiatives with education, research and conservation.

The Costa Rican pacific coast trail, 2004

A presentation illustrating how the proposed Pacific Coast trail will link the Monteverde Reserve complex to the gulf of Nicoya. Goals of the implementing the trail are outlined as well as key points, a proposal for a trail map and trail descriptions. Included are descriptions of the life zones found on the trail, the degree of difficulty for each trail, proposed rest stops, other attractions and activities. Our task was to explore design alternatives for the Coope-CASEM shopping center. Each group developed two alternatives focused on preserving open space, maximizing parking, improving access and visibility, controlling traffic flow, and the overall cohesiveness of the property.
