Abstract
“Creek Freak” is a first-person prose-poetic hybrid that portrays a short-lived romance between the narrator and a creature composed of various swamp elements that reveals how many of the narrator’s attempts at compassion or sincerity for the swamp creature are hollow platitudes that reflect the moral grandstanding gestures of those who wish to appear ecologically sensitive. The repetitive, back-and-forth exchange that concludes “Creek Freak” emphasizes the gap that continues to exist between ecological emergencies and collective social action.
