On Friday, May 29, 620 Sideways presents a screening of independent film smash Sideways, hosted by the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in their beautiful Grand Ballroom. A panel discussion with Academy Award winners Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor and Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen follows the film. Appetizers and wine (but no merlot!) round out this evening of movie magic.

A reception starts off the evening with luscious sweets and dessert wines, and entertainment by Paul Wilborn and Eugenie Bondurant.

Is TJ who he says he is? Is Sally who she says she is? Or is each who the other says the other is? A black man invades a white woman's life, claiming she's someone she says she isn't. The results are a racial and personal conflagration that changes both the intruder and intruded upon. A modern twist on Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson that unleashes a tsunami of anger and emotion leading to cleansing.

Postcard, Chromatophore: A Mail Art Exhibit, 2009

The 2nd annual mail art show will feature original works of art mailed from around the world. Compiled by local St. Petersburg artist Jennifer Zoellner, this exhibit will feature over 300 unique creations, many based on the Chromatophore theme. (Chromatophores are the color changing skin cells in creatures like the chameleon or octopus.)

"Terrible Jim Fitch" is set in a motel room where the relationship between a girl hustler, and a man, a small-time crook, is explored. Their relationship is a complex one. The man, in a way, loves the girl, being totally dependent upon her for simple human involvement. But he has a weakness for violence, a weakness played on by the girl...."Terrible Jim Fitch," is a long monolog but the audience sees the person being spoken to. Jim Fitch is mean, nasty and philosophic in his own way - a man who talks, argues, pleads, humors and finally threatens his girlfriend, in trying to get a response out of her.

Hugo is a story about the creative process in general, dancing, filmmaking, conversations, revolutions, spanglish, social constructs, Buddhism, smoking, music, fights, romance, friends and Mr. P.

The Studio@620 presents the world premiere of a new play by student playwright Jonathan Van Gils, Directed by Bob Devin Jones. This play centers around three characters: Hugo, The Producer, and Rachel. Hugo is young, homeless man; also a filmmaker. The Producer, a drug dealing, pot smoking, Joni Mitchell super-fan, Pellegrino swindling social revolutionary, leader of the band Snack Attack, and movie producer. Rachel, a lustrous, University student, writer with cinematic aspirations; also young. All three of these characters come together to work, live, and party in Hugo's loft. The goal is to manifest Hugo's long lost screenplay, but The Producer has other ideas in mind (involving a post-modern revolution). The play includes original music by Alex Van Gils as well as songs from Wilco, Joni Mitchell, Jennifer Trynin, etc. Hugo is a story about the creative process in general, dancing, filmmaking, conversations, revolutions, spanglish, social constructs, Buddhism, smoking, music fights, romance, friends and Mr. P.

Don't miss theme song inspired theatrical events and re-enactments from Hairspray before the film begins on Thursday July 24 and a special fashion show between films on Saturday evening July 26. Florimezzo provides educational and performance opportunities to students, music educators and community musicians, Members of the Florida Orchestra and other professional musicians serve as mentors (clinicians/coaches( by leading rehearsals and playing in the ensembles that perform in FloriMezzo concerts. Our organization is based on the philosophy that tremendous learning and exciting artisitc products are created in a cross-generational and cross-occupational environment. Our concerts reach a broad community base because of the diversity of our musicians. We program ensembles of all sizes to meet the needs of the wide variety of instruments played by our members. Our concerts provide audience members with the unique opportunity to hear fascinating, less frequently performed compositions, classic masterpieces and works by living composers in the Tampa Bay Area. Florimezzo has collaborated extensively with the Palladium Theater in productions of Madama Butterfly, Barber of Seville, and Die Fledermaus, and performed with Saint Petersburg Opera for La Bohème, The Elixer of Love, and Don Giovanni. All the movies will be presented by local film critics, authors, filmmakers and other noir experts and moderate a discussion after each film.“The Reluctant Sitter”, a fascinating collection of mugshots from the early 20th century, with contemporary DVD mugshot-like portraits. Curator Timothy Welsh is an independent photography dealer from Gulfport, who is currently teaching at the Osher Institute at Eckerd College.
