Abstract

In the fall of 1992, Mary E. Allcorn-Grigsby, Director of the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, negotiated a gift of underground newspapers and alternative press publications from the University of Missouri, Columbia. This collection occupies 36 archival storage boxes comprising approximately 45 cubic feet and includes 2,712 single issues, with some duplicate copies, representing over 70 titles. All issues fall within the inclusive dates from 1965 to 1978, with the bulk of the material representing the period from 1968 to 1972. The titles represented in the USF St. Petersburg Underground Newspaper Collection offer a broad editorial and geographical diversity. Numerous papers document the New Left and student radicalism from a national perspective. Local and regional papers allow researchers to understand movements in various cities and communities. Newspapers are arranged chronologically within title, and alphabetically by title.
