Note

The Kore was discovered in 1886 in the 'Korai Pit' northwest of the Erechtheion. She was reassembled of many fragments, but a large section of the statue is absent. The subject is adorned in a long chiton and short himation that falls off her shoulders symmetrically and is secured over her right shoulder and arm with relief buttons. The upper part of the chiton may have been painted blue, The garments are adorned with bands of meanders, crosses, and dots, once colored with red, yellow, and blue paint, today oxidized. She has the typical posture of a Korai, with her right hand carved from a separate piece of marble, she would have held out offerings to the goddess while in her left, she would have likely pulled aside her chiton to facilitate her step. The carved hair was wavy, falling on her back while four curls framed each side of her face and spilled to the front. On her head the Kore wears a stephane decorated with a meander, possibly painted blue and red. The upper surface of the stephane is adorned with metal rods once belonging to gold plated rays or blossoms. The bronze stem projecting from the top of her head could be a meniskos. The Kore’s eyes retain reddish-brown irises, black contour, pupils and eyebrows. Her ears are decorated by circular earrings with painted rosettes. This object is currently held at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.
