Note

This early Archaic Greek Naxian marble statue dates to roughly 600 BCE. It was restored to roughly 3.05 meters in height, making it larger than life. The kouros functioned as a votive offering dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon, placed outside of the sanctuary of the deity at Cape Sounion, Greece. The form is highly stylized, rigid, and forward-facing with its arms tightly held at his sides, with his left foot slightly stepped forward directly mimicking Ancient Egyptian royal statuary patterns. The geometric abstraction features harsh, blocky muscular contours, overly large almond eyes, and scroll-like ears. It includes elaborately braided hair features a pattern of shell-like forehead curls and hands down the back. This object is currently housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
