Note
This relief was pieced together with two fragments, one located on the Parthenon's southwest corner, the other in 1889 near the Propylaea. Three women and a young boy are shown holding hands and dancing to music played by a man at the head of the procession holding a double flute. The women each have a different hairstyle and a stephane (headband), and are adorned in chitons. The first woman holds a fruit. The surfaces around the clothing are flattened, indicating they were once wearing himations over their dresses that would have been rendered in paint. Scholars suggest these are the three Graces, with the flute player being Hermes, who was often worshipped with them. The Graces were highly revered on the Acropolis, particularly near the Propylaea. The presence of the small boy leads some to the assumption that the figures are Hermes and the three daughters of king Kekrop with their younger brother. This object is currently housed in the Acropolis Museum, Athens, Greece.
