Note

Inscription identifying dedication: "Hegeso daughter of Proxenos"
This is a funerary stele made of Pentelic marble that was discovered in 1870 at the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos. An Athenian lady sits, examining a piece of jewelry, held in her raised right hand, which would have been colored with paint. Before her stands her maid holding open a jewelry box. The deceased, as denoted by the inscription above, was Hgeiso, daughter of a consul. Today, a plaster replica stands in situ, with the original moved under cover in the mid 20th century. This stele was purchased in 1884 from Martinelli of Athens, and the object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
