Inscription at top for dedication
This is a Pentelic marble fragment of a votive relief of a naked hoplite with helmet and shield jumping onto a chariot led by a charioteer. This segment would have been included in the epistyle (architrave). It is thought to have formed the facing of the base of a dedication by a victor of the Apobates race, a chariot race of Ancient Greece. Carvings like this were often places in sanctuaries to honor athletic or military achievements. This object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
