Note
This marble bust is a Roman copy that dates to the Hadrianic period. It is modeled after a lost Greek piece often attributed to the classical sculptor Phidias or someone within his circle. Serving as a prime example of the Sappho type, modern scholars believe the subject to be a classical representation of the Greek god Aphrodite. The head has deep-set carved curls that frame the face. She is also wearing a tainia, or headband, that wraps around her brow, securing her hair in place. Her head is slightly turned to her right. This bust embodies the idealized symmetry and serene expression of the High Classical Greek period. This piece is currently held at the Naples National Archaeological Museum, Italy.
