Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean

ISLAC, the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean, is a center of excellence for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of South Florida, embracing teaching, research and service. With over 70 affiliate faculty members actively engaged in research, teaching and outreach in Latin American and the Caribbean, ISLAC is poised to become a central component of USF's growing international profile and reputation. Our ISLAC affiliate faculty are committed and engaged teachers with an over-all research profile that is distinguised by both productivity (an average of 2 articles and 1 book published per faculty/ year over the last five years) and innovation.

Located in the College of Arts and Sciences, ISLAC provides interdisciplinary and hemispheric perspectives for the study of the region and opportunities for scholarly collaboration for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students in the many different units and departments the Institute integrates. ISLAC faculty and affiliate faculty across the USF campus pursue anthropology, history, government and international affairs, political science, humanities, world language education, economics, arts, global and public health, business, and many other disciplines.

ISLAC is an academic unit offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Institute fosters and supports interdisciplinary faculty and student research, and contributes to the generation of knowledge through programming that includes: symposia, seminars and lectures; publications; faculty and graduate student travel and field research awards; and overseas study. ISLAC presents and sponsors artistic, cultural and outreach events that further the knowledge, appreciation and study of Latin America and the Caribbean within the university and the community.
