Abstract

This thesis explores the growing popularity of anime in the global entertainment marketplace and examines why consumers increasingly choose anime over traditional Western cartoons and television programming. Through a review of historical, cultural, and scholarly literature, as well as an analysis of fan opinions gathered from online sources, the study investigates the factors that make anime an appealing form of entertainment. Findings indicate that anime’s popularity is driven primarily by its distinctive visual artistry, compelling storytelling, and well-developed characters. The research argues that anime benefits from Japan’s high-context cultural approach to communication, which emphasizes symbolism, atmosphere, visual detail, and nuanced character development, allowing complex ideas and emotions to be conveyed more effectively. Additionally, anime’s diverse genres, expansive world-building, exploration of mature social and philosophical themes, and unique narrative structures, such as Kishōtenketsu, distinguish it from many Western animated productions. The study also highlights the role of fandom communities, conventions, and globalization in expanding anime’s international influence and cultural significance. Ultimately, the thesis concludes that anime is not merely a form of entertainment but a legitimate artistic and literary medium that resonates with audiences worldwide through its combination of visual expression, narrative depth, and emotional engagement.
