Abstract

This thesis evaluates the impact of the Eileen Hoffman Hafer UMatter Program, an inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) initiative at the University of South Florida, on the self-determination and potential employment outcomes of students with intellectual disabilities. Drawing on existing research demonstrating the benefits of inclusive postsecondary education, the study examines the first cohort of six UMatter students using The Arc’s Self-Determination Scale (SDS) to measure changes in autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self-realization over a two-year period. Statistical analyses of pre- and post-program assessments revealed significant increases in self-determination across all measured domains, with highly significant improvements observed in raw scores, norm-referenced scores, and positive self-determination indicators. These findings suggest that participation in UMatter may strengthen the personal and social competencies associated with successful employment and independent living. Although the study is limited by its small sample size, single-program focus, and reliance on self-reported data, the results provide preliminary evidence supporting the value of individualized, inclusive postsecondary education programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The research contributes to the growing body of literature on inclusive higher education and highlights the potential of programs like UMatter to promote self-determination, increase opportunities for workforce participation, and enhance long-term outcomes for students with intellectual disabilities.
