Abstract

Proprioception is a sense that allows individuals to identify how the musculoskeletal structures are in relation with each other and space, allowing amply perform without causing any injury. Conversely, attention is a cognitive process which allows people to focus on an activity while avoiding distractions. Likewise, sailors require attention using their spatial perception to know develop properly in their setting performing accurately the hiker techniques to maneuver the boat. Within the literature review has been identified a relation between proprioception, attention, and sport performance, but there is a lack of information about the relation between proprioceptive training and an enhancement of attention, and an increase of attention and a peak performance. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between proprioceptive training, attention, and performance among the sailing team. Methods: A pilot study was conducted applying proprioceptive training, the Attentional Control Scale, and the scores the different regattas were the sailing team of University of South Florida, St Petersburg campus participated (n=8). Results: Overall, there were changes between the baseline of the Attentional Control Scale with a mean of 45.38 (SD=2.97), compared with the second application with a mean score of 46 (SD=4.17), and the third one with a mean score of 44.75 (SD=2.12). Due to the small sample size a linear regression could not be conducted. It was found an improvement on the scores of the different regattas relating the times from the base line and during the proprioceptive training. Limitation: The study has no statistical validity and a small sample. Future directions: Have a large sample size. Conclusion: The findings showed an increment from the ACS and the scores on the regattas. However, due to serious limitations on the statistical validation, further research is essential to offer compelling conclusions.
