Abstract
This thesis examines the growing oral health crisis among older adults in the United States by exploring the barriers that prevent access to dental care and evaluating potential strategies for improvement. Through an interdisciplinary review of literature spanning dentistry, public health, gerontology, and healthcare policy, the study highlights the significant relationship between oral health and overall well-being, demonstrating how conditions such as dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, and reduced salivary flow can contribute to systemic illnesses, diminished quality of life, and increased healthcare costs. The research identifies key barriers faced by older adults, including limited mobility, transportation challenges, cognitive impairment, lack of dental insurance, financial constraints, and fear or mistrust of dental providers. Existing interventions such as caregiver education, improved oral hygiene practices, and multidisciplinary care models are evaluated for their effectiveness in addressing these challenges. Building on these findings, the thesis proposes innovative solutions, including expanded Medicare coverage for preventive dental services, integration of dental clinics into assisted living and long-term care facilities, greater use of mobile and accessible dental technologies, and the development of specialized geriatric dentistry programs centered on prevention, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Ultimately, the study argues that meaningful policy and healthcare system reforms are essential to improving oral health outcomes, reducing disparities in access to care, and supporting the health, independence, and quality of life of an increasingly aging population.
