Abstract

Oral history interview with Holocaust survivor Rose Rosen. Rosen was born in the former Czechoslovakia in 1921. When Czechoslovakia was invaded in 1938, she was living with her sister and brother-in-law. They were able to stay in their home until 1943, when they were deported to a ghetto. Rosen was in the ghetto for several weeks and was then transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was separated from her family. She was a prisoner at two other camps, Stutthof and Bromberg-Brahnau; in January 1945, she was liberated from Bromberg by the Soviet army. After liberation, Rosen and several other survivors made their way from city to city until they arrived in Warsaw. She then went back to Czechoslovakia, but, after realizing that the Soviets were going to occupy that country, decided to go to a displaced persons camp in Germany. Rosen met her husband at the displaced persons camp, where they were married and where their daughter Lila was born. Through her husband's relatives, they were able to come to the United States. In this interview, Rosen describes her experiences in the Holocaust and recounts some anecdotes from the various concentration camps in which she was a prisoner. She is joined by her daughter Lila Huse, who asks questions and frequently adds comments.
