Arlington National Cemetery, Va., on Memorial Day. May 30, 1904, Co. D, 2d Regiment National Guard, District of Columbia, Captain Wm. S. Hodges, in conjunction with W. B. Cushing Command Sons of Veterans, placed a Sons of Veterans' marker on the grave of Henry A. Dobson, who was 1st Sergeant of Co. D, 1st Regiment D.C. Volunteers, also commanded by Captain Hodges, in the Spanish War, and who lost his life from exposure in the trenches at Santiago.
When he volunteered he was a Sergeant in Co. 3, 2d Reg’t N.G.D.C., Colonel M.E. Urell, commanding.
Chaplain Charles C. Pierece, U.S.A., who stands at the right in the photograph, offered an invocation, and Col. Urell and Captain Hodges made remarks eulogistic of their former comrade.
Lieut. Leeman, who, as a Sergeant, was Henry’s tent-mate in Cuba, is placing the marker.
The family of the deceased soldier was present by invitation, and they show their appreciation of this act of remembrance by his comrades in the presentation to each of the participants of a copy of this photograph.
