Abstract
This is an oral history interview with Holocaust concentration camp liberator Roger Maurice. Maurice was a member of the 99th Infantry Division, which liberated several sub-camps of Dachau in April and May 1945. When his unit encountered the first camp, Maurice was assigned to guard the outside and keep the prisoners in while the officers investigated. They took the guards prisoner and helped bring some food into the camp. Maurice was wounded on April 29, so he was not present when they liberated the other camps, being in the hospital. He believes that General Patton himself presented him with the Purple Heart, but Maurice was unconscious at the time so did not actually see it.
