Abstract
Bob Fasnacht was originally a soldier in the 70th Infantry Division, but was transferred to the 80th Infantry Division when the Battle of the Bulge started in 1944. The 80th liberated Buchenwald on April 12, 1945 and Ebensee, a sub-camp of Mauthausen, on May 4, 1945. Fasnacht was present at the Ebensee liberation. A photographer before being drafted, he accompanied some units that were headed to Ebensee, where he took some pictures of the camp. Fasnacht frequently speaks about his experiences to schools and other groups; at one such event, he met a man who had been one of the Ebensee prisoners he helped liberate.
