Abstract
This is an oral history interview with Holocaust concentration camp liberator Peter J. DeMarzo. DeMarzo was a member of the 45th Infantry Division, which liberated Dachau on April 29, 1945. Originally in the Merchant Marine, DeMarzo was drafted and went to Europe as a replacement for the 45th Division, arriving in December 1944 just as the Battle of the Bulge started. After that battle, they were dispatched to Munich, and, on their way to that city, found Dachau. DeMarzo was one of the first soldiers from the 45th to enter the camp. In this interview, he provides a detailed description of the camp, its prisoners, his reaction to them, and how it continues to affect him.
