Abstract
This dataset contains photographs of sediment cores collected aboard R/V Weatherbird II cruise WB-0517 off the coast of Cuba in the Gulf of Mexico from 2017-05-11 to 2017-05-23. Sediment cores were longitudinally split and photographed with a digital camera with a scale in metric units (cm and mm) for a visual representation of sediment stratigraphy, color, and visual properties. The dataset includes the location, date and depth at which sediment cores were collected. The cruise documentation was provided for the R/V Weatherbird II cruise WB-0517, led by chief scientists Dr. Steve Murawski and Dr. David Hollander. Other related data - short-lived radioisotope (SLRad), sediment texture & composition, and bulk density/porewater of sediment cores collected during this cruise are available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifiers (UDIs): R6.x805.000:0037 (DOI:10.7266/n7-4pg2-4755), R6.x805.000:0041 (DOI: 10.7266/n7-78ae-7m58), and R6.x805.000:0043 (DOI: 10.7266/n7-58a1-b761) respectively.
Purpose
Visually describe and assess sediment cores for stratigraphy and stratigraphic integrity as well as identify visual indications in changes in sedimentation.

Supplemental Information
The dataset contains sediment core photographs (unitless). An excel spreadsheet contains the site ID, core ID, water depth (meters), latitude and longitude (decimal degrees), and core collection date (MM/DD/YYYY) for each sediment core photographs. Sediment core photographs (Jpeg image files) are named as - ||Ocean Instrument MC-800 Multicore, Shipek Grab Sampler, Nikon D5200.|||
