Abstract

This dataset contains individual detections of Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) and presumed pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) echolocation clicks from a site near the Dry Tortugas (25.537°N 84.632°W, depth 1220 m) in the Gulf of Mexico.

Supplemental Information

The dataset is organized by species. Dataset file sp180428_DT_07B.xml contains the detections for pantropical spotted dolphin and sp180457_DT_07B.xml contains the detections for Risso's Dolphin. The following is a list of data parameters found in the dataset files: Start – GMT dateTime that the detection was recorded (YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss); Channel – Non-negative integer that refers to the channel number used. This refers to the channel of the data, which does not necessarily correspond to sensor position within an array (int); SpeciesID – Taxonomic serial numbers from the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (https://www.itis.gov/). SpeciesID 180428 = pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), SpeciesID 180457 = Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus); Call – Type of call detected (clicks); ReceivedLevel_dB – The received level of the call (dB re 1 μPa);|Passive acoustic monitoring was conducted with High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages. These data were scanned for delphinid clicks using a combination of computer algorithms and manual (analyst) scanning of the waveform and spectral data.|High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages|200 kHz sample rate at three sites|Less than 5 percent false detection rate.|

Purpose

This dataset was developed to assess the population of dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico at the time and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
