Description
Educational gaming is a current trend in higher education to promote engagement and critical thinking. Utilizing Escape Rooms in the classroom is one way to incorporate the principles of gaming while adding the elements teamwork, and creative critical thinking. An escape room can be simply defined as a series of puzzles that must be completed in a specific amount of time, often by a group of individuals. The puzzles revolve around a central theme and require creative thought processes to solve. The same principles of immersive escape rooms seen in social gaming can be incorporated in a resource scarce classroom to achieve positive educational outcomes through effective technology utilization. This session will cover escape room design strategies to achieve critical and creative thinking outcomes, and practical implementation strategies for instructors. This session will begin with an introduction of escape rooms, describe best practices in design structure based upon desired activity outcomes, and model classroom implementation. The participants will engage in an escape room activity to learn from the participant perspective about how an escape room can be utilized to promote critical thinking. The activity is designed to demonstrate how this activity can be effectively utilized in a classroom setting with restricted resources. Concluding the activity, the instructors will debrief, share experiences of implementation in various classroom settings and resources for instructors to start creating their own!
