Description

This Interactive Workshop offers three innovative, ideas to help teachers position their students as creative, active, empowered, self-directed learners. The ideas are supported by the following theories: socio-constructivist; Noddings’ Ethos of Care Theory, and; Self-Directed Learning Theory. The approaches meet the instructional, comfort, and psychological needs of all learners, including exceptionally able students, those from marginalized populations, and English language learners. In the workshop we will support attendees as they work in small groups and participate in the three classroom tested, creative approaches. The collaborative strategies, entitled, Simulations, Transmediated Text, and Social Games may be adapted for all grade levels and disciplines and will be published in our forthcoming book on student empowerment. Simulations require a group of student collaborators to figure out solutions to an authentic problem by following a scenario and a set of guidelines presented by a teacher, such as “What do you want to find out and why” (i.e., rationale), and “What do you already know about this problem?” (i.e., background information). Engaging in Transmediation of Text, readers, or listeners demonstrate what they learned through semiotic systems other than prose or oral communication (e.g., visual art, music, drama, poetry, dance, etc.). Students who play Social Games work together to become adept in English as a Second Language, Mandarin, or mathematics, social studies, and science. Students who participate in these three approaches report their work and discoveries to their peers and peers offer critiques and suggestions.
