Abstract

This is an oral history interview with Fabian Oweazim, a survivor of the Asaba Massacre, a mass killing of civilians which occurred in 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War. Oweazim, who was thirteen years old when the massacre took place, was staying in Asaba with his uncle at the time, and spent several days hiding in their house's ceiling to avoid the soldiers. His uncle and a family friend were killed. Oweazim describes his experience of the attack and its aftermath, and discusses its causes. He also describes its effects on him personally, recounting an incident from when he was training to be a police officer.
