Abstract

This is an example of the Bungalow Style. The style has its roots in William Morris' Arts and Crafts movement in England. In California, the architects Greene and Greene added to the concept of a crafted and unified inside-outside design the beautiful and conspicuous wood joinery for which they are known and which has a kinship to Japanese architecture. The "bungalow" was particularly promoted by Gustav Stickley (1848-1942) who wanted to see well-made modest housing in which craftsmanship was aided by machine-produced parts. Florida had its own version of the Bungalow. It is typified by low-pitched roofs, emphatic wood supports, and especially by porches with heavy piers and stubby columns (including a porte cochere or "carriage porch"), and often a second story breeze-room. This house, from circa 1920, is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Tampa. Seen is a view from the northwest.
