Abstract

This mainly Romanesque Revival church, built 1897-1905, is a smaller version of a church which was built in Galveston, Texas, by Nicholas Clayton. Brother Cornelias Otten, S.J., built Sacred Heart and also one like it in Augusta, Ga. When Clayton got wind of Otten's building activity, he charged him with plagiarism and sued the Jesuits. The case was settled in favor of Clayton. The Galveston original was destroyed by a hurricane. Sacred Heart's "vaulting" is decoratively painted wood and plaster hung from trusses. Most of the church has a metal and wood skeletal framework and this is apparent both inside and out because walls and buttresses look thin (note the slightness of the window reveals) and pilasters are disproportionate and poorly grouped. This is the northeast view.
