Abstract

The most striking feature of this museum, opened in 1980, is its space-frame umbrella roof. On the southside, it sweeps down to its six columnar supports which flank the drop-off-levels, interrupted by a continuous skylight which lights the gap running lengthwise through the two/three story building. The gap splits the parallelogram plan in two, with enclosed spaces to the south and open exhibition spaces to the north. Ducts are exposed and brightly colored. The continuous open space under the umbrella roof is so oriented and shaped as to provide maximum airflow according to prevailing wind. The result is that the inside/outside space is up to twenty degrees cooler than the temperature outside. This is a view from the northeast.
