Heat Exposure and Respiratory Illness in Orange County, Florida: Exploring Environmental Health Patterns

Abstract

The rising temperatures over time have led to more frequent extreme heat days in Florida. Extreme heat exposure has been linked to worsening respiratory illnesses such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These effects are more severe in vulnerable groups with pre-existing respiratory disorders, who may have heat-induced asthma attacks or worsened COPD symptoms. This study looks at the relationship between increased heat exposure and the occurrence of respiratory illnesses in Orange County, Florida, to see how rising temperatures affect the community. Public weather communicators in Orlando, Florida suggested the strategic messaging to raise awareness about heat-related health risks, thereby supporting community adaptation in this situation.
