Abstract

Availability and accessibility of hurricane relief aid post-disaster is a significant issue for individuals and families as they recover from the storm. Hurricane Ian (2022) wreaked havoc on the west coast of Florida, killing 149 people and causing over $100 billion in damages. The extent of the damage and loss shows the need for better preparation, but less obviously the need for better post-disaster relief efforts.

Sources from local newspapers to national news showed large-scale issues in receiving aid and rebuilding lives after the disaster. Organizations like FEMA that are supposed to offer aid to impacted people have been questioned on the basis of rampant inequality. However, new technologies are offering us a better path forward when it comes to getting relief to those who need it most.
