Description
The selective recognition of ammonium ions is highly important for the protection of the environment, treatment of wastewater, and in agriculture. The focus of this project is the development and evaluation of potential synthetic receptors that are capable of strongly and selectively binding ammonium. Known receptor structures are modified by varying the cavity size, molecular geometry, hydrogen bonding groups, and electronic properties. The resulting compounds are evaluated through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Titrations (NMR) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to confirm binding and quantify their affinity for ammonium. The goal of this work is to identify promising receptor structures and to continue the development of potential ammonium hosts.
