Abstract

For the 10th consecutive year, Suncoast Center, Inc., Creative Arts Unlimited, Inc., Florida Craftsmen and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg have collaborated to present Survivors Speak, an exhibit designed to increase awareness, understanding, and prevention of the horrific trauma of sexual violence. For the last decade, the Survivors Speak exhibit has used the powerful prism of art to highlight the journey of healing taken by courageous survivors of sexual violence. Each year, clients of all ages from Suncoast Center’s Trauma Services share an intimate glimpse into their pain, treatment, and recovery. For the 2011 exhibit, participants created their unique pieces of the community puzzle – literally. Provided with only a blank canvas in the form of a puzzle piece, each survivor reflected how their story fits into the center of a community-wide coalition of support designed to prevent, treat, and de-stigmatize this horrific trauma. The exhibit of artwork crafted by clients of all ages from the Suncoast Center's Trauma Services program was on display at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library from April 7 through April 29, 2011.
