From flying cars, evil corporations, killer robots and cybernetic enhancements, creatives have always liked to imagine what the future will be. This novella is no different, drawing from developing technology, climate change predictions and global political discourse to try and estimate what our future will look like. Told as a simple ‘day in the life’ story, it follows a cyborg who saves a young human girl, taking her through what is an envisioned future of America; a country struggling with the effects of desertification, water crises, mass surveillance, wealth disparity and a growing divide between what it means to be human and the desire to artificially ‘enhance’ oneself. Computers made out of lab grown brain cells, machines created to serve and kill, and how the human is incompatible with large for-profit models are all explored in the story, a look at what our developing technology of today will do to the people of tomorrow.
