Music is a constantly evolving medium, shaped by multiple factors. It is interpreted in many unique ways, and plays an important role in expressing cultural identity, shared values, and traditions. Beyond language, music communicates emotion and meaning, exerting a nonverbal influence on many lives. In this review, the sociocultural factors influencing the global diversity of music were analyzed through interdisciplinary lenses. The PRISMA protocol was used to screen existing sources on the topic. Sources were found through Google Scholar using phrases such as History of Eastern/Western Music, geographical impacts on musical instruments, evolution of musical genres, and evolution of musical instruments. Literature reviews, books, and irrelevant articles were excluded during screening using Abstrackr. Sources show that through evolutionary analysis, music can be traced back to certain cultures, tying it to new structures and materials such as rhythm, harmony, and melody. Musical instruments have been manufactured throughout history, allowing them to become more diverse. Music is seen as a universal language, and through the emergence of popular genres, emotional responses are evoked. Cross-cultural music is influenced by factors such as demographics, emergence in minority groups, and festive events, and can be increased by supporting the diversity of cultural music. Analyzing the diversity of music through multiple lenses is important to promoting awareness and understanding of different cultures and the stories they tell through their music styles and components. Future work in this subject may include analyzing digital platforms to explore new genres and sources for statistical analysis.
