Description
Ayurveda is one of the oldest forms of medicine originated in India. SARS-CoV-2, or COVID-19 was a global pandemic and one of the biggest ones that we had seen in recent years. We focus our research on three medicinal plants that greatly assist in combatting COVID-19 symptoms: Piper longum (Indian long pepper), Phyllanthus emblica (Amla), and Glycyrrihiza glabra (Yashtimadhu). Indian long pepper prevents the COVID-19 by targeting the ACE2 receptor preventing COVID-19 from entering the cell. Not only does this allow for prevention, but it also allows for quicker recovery times. Amla plays a vital role in immunity through anti-inflammatory, anti-allergen, anti-thrombotic, and anti-microbial properties. The key to this is its high Vitamin C content and other mechanisms that target COVID-19 symptoms. Last but not least, Yashtimadhu plays a vital role in fighting off infections and foreign particles. It also contains wound-healing properties, critical for COVID-19 care. We will investigate the different phytochemicals and other compounds found in these medicinal plants that aid in improving symptoms of COVID-19. Our literature review aims to help acknowledge Ayurveda as an actual source for medicinal benefit by allowing more familiarity and knowledge about this alternative “naturopathic’ form of medicine outside India. We hope to encourage its integrative use globally in the field of medicine.
