Abstract

Oral history interview with Fon Silvers, a member of USF’s Golden Brahma Pep Band. Silvers, a bass player, was a member of the Pep Band for one season in the 1980s. The Pep Band was essentially a small big band, with saxophones, brass, rhythm, and guitar; it played at basketball games. Silvers’ understanding is that the Music Department was asked to provide a band to play during the games, and after the musicians had been recruited, that was the limit of the department’s involvement. There were no auditions, no rehearsals, no uniforms, and the music in their folders was never changed. Silvers enjoyed playing in the Pep Band, which was fun, but it was not like the experience that members of the Herd of Thunder Marching Band have, because USF had yet to develop its identity as a university.
