Abstract

Mark A. Algeo was a student at the University of South Florida’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) from 1971 until 1974. After graduating, Mr. Algeo went to work for the Citrus County public school system as the rural county’s head of special education. Going into great detail, Mr. Algeo recalls various aspects of his time at a young USF, including some of his memorable professors; the academic requirements of the speech pathology program; the kinds of CSD therapies offered at USF; and the state of the educational facilities at the time, which he characterizes as “terrible.” Interviewer Stephanie de Silva offers her experience as a current USF CSD student intermittently throughout the interview, highlighting the many changes that have occurred within the department over the last 50 years. Mr. Algeo also discusses at length his career as an administrator and speech pathologist within the Citrus County school system, where he has been employed for over 40 years. He details what it was like to develop the county’s special education program from scratch; contrasts the teaching experience between the county’s public and private schools; discusses the changes he has witnessed in CSD practices over the span of his career; and recounts various anecdotes of his unique experience, from providing CSD services to schoolchildren out of a van to the challenges of obtaining funding for special education programs through the State of Florida’s Full-Time Equivalency system.
