Abstract
Jamie Hansen presents the history and publishing practices of the McLoughlin Brothers, a 19th- and early 20th-century American firm known for children's picture books and toy books. Hansen describes developments in illustration and color printing techniques, including hand coloring, wood engraving, and chromolithography, as well as the firm's collaborations with illustrators such as Thomas Nast and its later acquisitions by Milton Bradley. Jamie Hansen also shows examples from the University of South Florida Libraries' Special Collections to illustrate changes in children's literature, printing technology, and visual culture.
