Abstract
This short presentation by Arwen Main describes the Brave and Bold dime novel series held in the University of South Florida Libraries' Special Collections. The narration outlines the historical development of dime novels as inexpensive popular literature for working-class youth, summarizes common genres and narrative conventions, and identifies recurring themes, values, and prejudices present in the stories. The presentation also addresses the publication history of Brave and Bold, its decline in the early 20th century, and its research value for the study of American popular culture.
