Are Burglar Bars Truly Safe?
Abstract

Burglar bars in historical residential areas provide safety against crime yet may also pose a fire hazard if not retrofitted. These areas have families of various socioeconomic statuses (SES), which may not be able to afford the retrofitting, or want to take them off. This research is to determine the importance of burglar bars in families of different SES in Highland Pines and V.M Ybor, while also taking into account that these bars may pose a fire hazard or depreciate the value of the houses if removed. GIS mapping and contact with the local fire departments were made to assess the dangers of the burglar bars, while also observing incidences of burglaries in the neighborhoods. Continuing involvement with the neighborhood associations and the East Tampa Community Revitalization Partnership was performed to increase awareness of the problem and deem if retrofitting is feasible. It was found that basic fire safety needs to be taught to these neighborhoods, and retrofitted bars are necessary for both the high crime rates and fire safety. Further funding should be pursued to retrofit all the houses in these areas, and they can pose as models for all gentrified areas with high crime rates.
