Formulation and Characterization of Methylprednisolone Nanoemulsions

Abstract

Methylprednisolone (MP) is a corticosteroid recommended for bronchial inflammation, acute bronchitis and autoimmune diseases. MP is a drug of choice for the suppression of inflammation, such as swelling and redness of bronchioles. Nanoemulsions (NE), with their significant increase in surface area due to nano particulate globules, can be an advantageous drug delivery system for anti-inflammatory drugs, such as MP. The purpose of the present research was to formulate and characterize MPNEs. Through the use of Soybean oil and distilled water, a series of NEs with MP contents of 0.45, 1.5 and 4.5 mg/mL were prepared. A combination of phospholipid and Pluronic F-68 were used as an emulsifying agent. Methyl and Propyl paraben were added as preservatives. MPNEs were evaluated for pH, viscosity, particle size distribution, zeta potential, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy characterization and release studies. The results indicated the pH of the MPNEs to be 6.52. The average particle size of the MPNEs was 253.3 nm and zeta potential was -70.83 mV. Results of other studies will be discussed during the presentation. MPNEs can be used in therapeutic applications to treat lung injuries due to smoking, pneumonia, bronchitis, toxicity and other issues that could otherwise result in organ failure.
