Exploring demographic visualization using ArcGIS software
Abstract
This project evaluates past and current population data for a number of regions in the United States using ArcGIS software to produce different types of population distribution maps. Also I will attempt to identify qualitative aspects of available population data, and evaluate their usefulness for demographic analysis. Examples of such qualitative data include, but are not limited to, ethnicity, economic data, marital status, age, and other indicators of socioeconomic status. I explore different methods of integrating this data into easily interpreted maps for comparative purposes over time. The purpose of this project is to establish the usefulness of US Census data, and other available population data, in recognizing large scale changes in demographic distribution and to explore how compiling such data in GIS files can be useful to anthropologists and other social scientists for further analysis. The goal of the project is to determine the usefulness and resolution of census and other population data for determining changes in a population and its distribution over time, as well as exploring the types of qualitative data which can be correlated to this data.
