Abstract:
USF Dance Performance major, Esophia Higgins choreographed the modern dance piece, …embrace it, during the 2010 fall semester. The septet, created for her senior research project, was recently performed in February 2011 in the USF Student Dance Production Concert and was selected by the dance faculty to represent the USF dance department in the informal showing at the Spring 2011 American College Dance Festival at Florida State University. Inspiration for this piece came from the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Logical Levels of Change Model developed by Dilts & Bateson. Through her research, Higgins was enlightened by a moment of self-evaluation, which motivated her to write poetry about her discovery of her own NLP. Using the information she acquired about NLP and her own poetry, Higgins created her movement vocabulary for the piece. In addition to music, two of the sections included Higgins reciting her own poetry live as accompaniment to the dance. The structure of a square in her choreography represents the consequence of illogical NLP. Through the collaboration of the text and choreography, the audience experiences the three stages one processes through in pursuit of gaining a positive outcome from the Neuro-Linguistic Programming Logical Levels of Change Model.
Presentation Requirements:
For the symposium presentation, I would like to present this project as a video, from a DVD. Whether the work be shown on a television or projected screen (both with sound capabilities) is flexible to the available accommodations. The piece itself is 8 minutes and 54 seconds, and I would also like to give a live oral introduction with some movement demonstration as time allows.
