Abstract

Reproductive success can be linked to pollination success because pollination is needed for plants to reproduce and put out seeds. Factors that affect pollination success include color, nectar, scent, flower shape and size. Past research on Pleurothallis sanchoi has indicated that of the three color morphs, yellow, purple, and yellow with purple petals (YPP), yellow is the most attractive color. This study examines the importance of flower size and color in attracting pollinators in P. sanchoi. A total of 51 individuals were observed and the number of days required for pollinia removal was noted. The flowers were measured with a caliper for length. In the purple flowers, the amount of yellow area was measured by using a pinhead to estimate the overall yellow area. Color and length were significantly correlated, with yellow flowers being the smallest and purple flowers being the biggest. Pollinia removal was significantly correlated to color and was fastest in YPP flowers and slowest in purple flowers, although yellow flowers showed nearly equivalent rates to YPP flowers. The relation between flower length and days required for pollinia removal was not significant, as well as flower length and amount of yellow in purple flowers. It appears that yellow flowered plants have a slight reproductive advantage. YPP and purple flowers may be maintained in the population if more than one species are the pollinators for P. sanchoi and have different pollinator preferences or if these color morphs influence pollinators through scent or nectar.

Resumen

El éxito reproductivo se puede vincular a la polinización, porque el éxito de la polinización es necesario para que las plantas se reproduzcan y pongan las semillas. Factores que influyen en el éxito de la polinización incluyen el color, néctar, aroma, forma de flor y tamaño. Las investigaciones anteriores sobre Pleurothallis sanchoi ha indicado que una de las tres formas de color, púrpura, amarilla y de color amarillo con pétalos de color púrpura (PPJ), el amarillo es el color más atractivo. Este estudio examina la importancia del tamaño de las flores y el color para atraer a los polinizadores en P. sanchoi. Un total de 51 individuos fueron observados y el número de días requeridos para la eliminación de polinias se señaló. Las flores se midieron con un calibrador para la longitud. En las flores de color púrpura, la cantidad de área de color amarillo se midió utilizando una cabeza de alfiler para estimar el área amarilla global. El color y la longitud se correlacionaron significativamente, con las flores amarillas son las flores más pequeñas y morado son los más grandes. Eliminación de las polinias se correlacionó significativamente con el color y fue el más rápido en las flores del PPJ y el más lento en las flores de color púrpura, aunque las flores amarillas mostraron tasas casi equivalentes a las flores de Participación Juvenil. La relación entre la longitud de la flor y días requerido para la eliminación de las polinias no fue significativa, así como la longitud y la cantidad de flores de color amarillo en las flores de color púrpura. Parece que las plantas con flores amarillas tienen una ventaja reproductiva leve. Las flores PPJ y morado se pueden mantener en la población, si más de una especie son los polinizadores de P. sanchoi y tienen diferentes preferencias de los polinizadores, o si estas formas de color influyen a los polinizadores por medio del olfato o el néctar.
