Abstract
In this oral history Andy Huse interviews Gwendolyn Powell, who is a member of the The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In the interview, Gwendolyn Powell talks about her experience growing up in a segregated Tampa during the fifties and sixties. Powell describes the Black Central Business District, which was a part of Tampa’s Central Avenue, and details the types of businesses that were in this area. She reflects on the offensive comments she received as a Black female as well as explains how she became involved with NAACP. Gwendolyn Powell describes her involvement with NAACP’s Youth Council, including the organized protests that she had been a part of at the Tampa Theatre.
